Erewhon was initially founded in 1968, and was acquired by current CEO Tony Antoci and his wife Josephine in 2011 when it was a single grocery store in LA. Since then, Tony and Josephine have opened a number of new locations that have performed exceptionally well. Erewhon has developed a culture focused on delivering the healthiest products to its customers and has codified this commitment through The Erewhon Standard: “Clean and pure foods and products, ethically and sustainably produced, direct from the earth – it’s good for you and good for the planet.” This standard commits to keeping Erewhon’s grocery shelves free of any products that contain artificial preservatives, synthetic pesticides, ripening agents, growth hormones, irradiation, fumigants, and other additives. Erewhon also offers a high quality array of prepared foods, which today is 95%+ organic and comprises a wide variety of options that cater to consumers following restrictive diets such as paleo, gluten-free, vegan and dairy-free. The business is also actively involved in its local community, hosting events, supporting local charities and prioritizing local sourcing from organic farmers and suppliers whenever possible.
Stripes identified Erewhon through our internal sourcing efforts and tracked the brand closely. In doing our work, it became clear that Erewhon’s high standards and commitment to community have helped it garner a cult-like following unlike any other grocery store in the country. When it came time to choosing a partner, Stripes’ experience in scaling businesses and brand-building, specifically within Food & Beverage CPG and Restaurants, appealed to Tony and Josephine.
