As GoFundMe gained traction, Brad and Andy realized that the majority of their users were individuals fundraising for personal causes and life events.
GoFundMe was founded by Brad Damphousse and Andy Ballester in 2010 as a platform for charities to raise money online. As GoFundMe gained traction, Brad and Andy realized that the majority of their users were individuals fundraising for personal causes and life events. Their users’ stories were both inspiring and uplifting, fueling the founders’ desire to evolve and enhance the platform to help users reach more donors through swiftly growing digital channels, including social media. The founders’ resulting investments in the platform, paired with rapid consumer adoption of online payments and the authenticity of campaigners’ stories have sparked tremendous interest from donors worldwide and allowed GoFundMe to emerge as one of the world’s leading online social giving platforms serving millions of campaigners and donors across the globe.
GoFundMe was identified through Stripes' network in late 2014. We were highly impressed by the founders’ vision for the platform, and the traction that GoFundMe had achieved already with no external funding. It was clear that the stories shared on the platform had touched many lives, and was leading the wave in bringing personal cause fundraising online. As a result of this impressive growth, as well as the realization of how much opportunity remained ahead for the company, founders Brad and Andy looked to bring on partners who could help them expand their user base and bring GoFundMe to the world. Along with a seasoned group of investors, Stripes was chosen for our track record of successfully working closely with partner companies cutting across the worlds of new media, online marketplaces, and digital commerce.
We are thrilled to be a part of GoFundMe’s pioneering work in the field of social giving and to support their mission of sharing their users’ stories with the world.
